3/8/2015 - Shannon Fields Victoria Zupancic
Below you will find a presentation titled "Lahainaluna Boarding Department" by Shannon Fields & Victoria Zupancic. We ask that you review our proposal, which describes in detail a four year comprehensive program, focused on academics and that embeds essential components of culture, history and sustainability.
We are proposing our plan to the Working Group Monday March 9 with the hopes of it being adopted and moving through to the Complex Area Superintendent, the Board of Education, and finally the Legislature, with implementation beginning August 2015.
Based upon the motion approved last meeting, there will be a 10-minute discussion regarding our proposal. We hope you have the opportunity to review prior to attending the meeting.

Lahainaluna High School
Boarding Program Proposal
Proposal: Create an after school academic enrichment program for the Lahainaluna High School Boarding Program using STEM Works as the base curriculum.
Rationale: Science Technology Engineering and Math are skills that our students need for the 21st century world. This program would introduce students to STEM skills and have them use those skills to solve local real world problems. This model is called “service learning” it teaches the students how to give back to the community they live in and it incorporates the culture of that community in the learning. By using this “service learning” model, the impact on the students is meaningful and will stick with them long after they leave us.
Description: The classes will be held after school, during the normal boarders work time. At first, the class would meet twice a week, although future expansion is possible. The facilitator would lead students in their various skill development and the students would be able to research projects they would like to do. Maui Educational Development Board would provide professional development for the facilitators and students. MEDB also has summer internships the students could apply to, even on their home island. The students would be able to take classes during the day that would connect to the after school program strengthening and enriching the students learning. Although the lead for this after school enrichment program is the Industrial Engineering Pathway, the students would be able to eventually connect with other career pathways.
